CENTER
MISSION :
The mission is to bring nanoscale science and engineering to research
and education in forest resources and the forest products industry.
Developments in nanotechnology are affording scientists new methods
of engineering and characterizing materials and processes on the
molecular scale. These new capabilities will provide the basis for
developing new products and manufacturing processes which will shape
the future of renewable materials and energy. Specifically,
the center has the following goals:
- Advance the understanding of the natural synthesis and nanoscale
organization of lignocellulose and the relationship to its physical
and chemical properties.
- Develop and apply nanoscale engineering principles to the creation
of new renewable and sustainable materials, coatings and devices
based on lignocellulose.
- Develop and apply nanoscale engineering principles to the creation
of new materials and processes for the disassembly of lignocellulose.
- Enhance undergraduate and graduate education in agriculture,
forest resources, biological engineering and materials engineering
disciplines to produce a new class of students who will lead the
field of lignocellulosic materials.
- Proactively engage industry both individually and collectively
through center activities and professional organizations to create
an understanding of relevant nanotechnologies and their application.
- Create effective collaborations between PSU researchers and both
industry and other academic and government institutions.
- Engage in effective technology transfer and dissemination promoting
economic growth.
